Term 3 Week 2
Mr Micheal Grogan
Welcome Back
I would like to start by saying welcome. welcome back to all of our returning families, and extend a very warm welcome to all of our new families. In the past two weeks we have had 23 new students join our school community with a further 5 starting on Monday. I hope you have all found the beginning of your time here at BCSS positive and that you will enjoy being part of this unique community.
NAIDOC Celebrations
Next week we will be holding our 2023 NAIDOC Celebrations. This years theme is For Our Elders.
Throughout the week students will be participat8ing in cultural lessons with Rhan Hooper. Rhan is a proud Kooma/Kunja man who has working with schools, government bodies and corporations over the past few years sharing his knowledge and supporting people to deepen thier knowdleg of First Nations culture.
The highlight of next week will be our NAIDOC Assembly. The Assembly will feature performances from Rhan and the Deadly Dancers from Leichhardt State School. We are also honoured ot have Songwoman Marrochy coming along to deliver a Welcome to Country.
The students from Leichhardt will then join with our younger students to participate in further cultural awareness lessons throughout the day.
We hope you can all join us on this speacial day as we we acknowledge and celebrate the longest living cultures in the world.
2023 Art Show and Auction
Our 2023 Art Show will be held on Friday August 4. This is the largest fundriaisng event for our P&C for the year. It is always a great night to connect within and across our school community while getting the chance to see some of the amazing work of our students.
We will once again be turning level 1 of I Block into the Leichhardt Gallery for the evening. On the night, our school community will be able to walk through a gallery of over 500 individual pieces of art produced by our students and the 20 whole class canvases that will be available for purchase on the night as well.
For parents and community members wishing to take home a one of a kind piece of art, the auction is a must.
Student art pieces are currently for sale via Flexschools for $20 each. If you have not done so, I would encourage you to register for Flexischools to allow you to take home your child's work.
First Nations Sports Shirts
We have been in communication with School Locker and they have told us we can expect delivery of the new shirts in the coming week. To speed up delivery they are delivering all shirts to the school. We will then hand out the shirts to families.
If you have paid for postage, School Locker will be refunding you. Once we have recieved the shirts we will nofity all families of how they can be collected and pass on the information from School Locker about how the costs for postage will be refunded.
School Dress Code
Our school like all state schools has a School Dress Code. At our most recent P&C meeting the dress code was discussed and an amended dress code was drafted. The draft dress code below is now available for consultation. At our next P&C meeting we hope to formally endorse the dress code and begin applying it with a graduated introduction of new items and enformcement.
If you have ideas/suggestions for the draft dress code I would invite you to email myself (principal@brisbanecentralss.eq.edu.au) to share your thoughts.

A big and busy start to Term 3 with plenty to celebrate.
Year 4 camp was a huge success with many of the students coming and sharing their experiences. It is a truly wonderful experience for our Year 4’s who get the opportunity to develop independence and demonstrate their ability to be resilient and build some wonderful friendships. A special thanks to our Year 4 teachers and Mrs Gawne for spending the three days with the students.
Congratulations to our Creative Generation team for their amazing efforts over the past week. Ms Clark led our students over the three days with such high esteem. Again, our students and parents returned with such admiration for their achievements and engagement in the process. Thank You Ms Clark for your time and effort in ensuring this special event takes place.
Over the next week we look forward to welcoming Rhan Hooper who will lead our classes in NAIDOC activities, in addition to our special assembly on Thursday 27th July. Our district athletics team will also head to Geebung SS to compete for a place in the Metropolitan North Athletics Team. We wish them all the best of luck and to do themselves proud!
On Friday night, 4th August we once again will be hosting our Art Show. A great opportunity for the community to gather together and view the amazing art work completed by our individual students and class pieces.
Mr Nick Darguch / Deputy Principal
Playgroup
Our Playgroup is up and running for Term 3. This term we have moved down to F Block, ground level, in our own classroom. This space continues to build and develop through the amazing work of our young students and the facilitation of Ms Maile.
Come and enjoy the space each Friday morning and create a learning community for your child before they begin school.
You may have noticed that around the school we have implemented a range of signage outlining the school’s expectations of being a safe, respectful learner. Each sign is targetted towards a certain area and includes the criteria for success. This signage allows students to develop the ability to regulate their behaviour when at play, eating lunch or transitioning between classes. If you are walking past, take notice and check-in with your child around what is the expectation for that specific area.
Mrs Maureen Kelly / HOC
Learning Webs
Each term parents are provided with an overview of the curriculum that the students are learning for that term. These are called the Learning Webs. The Learning Webs also provide key school and class information.
The Learning Webs are available on the Brisbane Central State School website.

STEM Convention 2023
On Thursday the 14th of July, Our Technology Captains, Agrit, Smyaan and Abhishek joined schools from all around Brisbane to attend the Kid’s STEM Convention. They attended the St Lucia campus of the University of Queensland and had the pleasure of listening to leaders across Queensland in the field of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.
The leaders were able to hear from a keynote speaker from Gilmore Space Technologies, a Gold Coast based space company that will be launching an Australian made rocket carrying an Australian made satellite launched from an Australian space port. Other speakers included researchers in renewable energy, stem cells and tissue engineering.
From here, the Technology captains will be engaged in a 10 week project that they will present at the Queensland Academy of Science and Mathematics. They will be competing with 300 students from across Brisbane in the hope to achieve an award for their research in a particular area of their interest.

Creative Generations
Thank you for your wonderful contribution to another successful CGEN! Out There, In Here, We’re All Connected was a thought-provoking theme, and we are proud of our student cast and crew who worked so hard to bring this special performance to life. Over the past 7 days we witnessed new friendships blossom, students from near and far collaborating and a team of passionate teachers, supervisors and crew working together to stage the 19th annual CGEN.
A massive thank you to the wonderful teachers and parents who supported their students’ involvement as without you they couldn’t be involved. We acknowledge the many hours that go in to making these opportunities possible and recognise that CGEN 2023 would not have happened without your support.
Television broadcast
The show will be aired on Network 10 at 12 noon, Saturday 28 October 2023. Please check your local guides.
It’s important to note that not all items from the live show will be part of the TV broadcast and the selection of material is at the discretion of broadcast producers. The broadcast will be a 90-minute edited version of CGEN.
CGEN 2023 photos
Keep an eye on the Facebook page in the coming weeks. When we receive our professional photographs, a 2023 gallery will be uploaded for you to enjoy.
Save the date – CGEN 2024 (REMINDER: Week 2, Term 3)
The key performance dates for CGEN 2024 are confirmed. Due to venue availability, CGEN Show Week will be in Week 2, Term 3 (15 – 20 July) instead of the usual Week 1. We recognise this may pose challenges, however we hope with enough notice, it will still be manageable. The week will take a similar structure to 2023 in terms of rehearsals. Show dates will be Thursday 18, Friday 19 and Saturday 20 July 2024.
The Senior Choir will be performing at the school Artshow in Week 4 on Friday 4 August.
There will be no Senior Choir rehearsal in Week 3 on Thursday 27 July. Our next rehearsal will be on Thursday 3 August at 8.00am.
We hope the CGEN students had a wonderful experience. The CGEN team will be in touch in October for the lead in to nominations opening and with archival footage.
