Term 2, Week 4 Newsletter
Under 8's Day
Library
We have all heard the saying, ‘Never judge a book by its cover’. But children do. Stand and watch a child in a book store or better still in our library. As they browse through the shelves and around our new ladybug book carriages or the green non-fiction one and two dots spinning shelves if the cover is attractive enough, they will like it and want to explore it. Their first impressions are shaped by the images or the pictures used in the book.
So what books are the popular with children of the world and in our school for 2024?
Thrillers and mysteries are still popular; however, graphic novels are maintaining their momentum with fantasy to historical leading and realistic fiction hot in pursuit. Just ask any child in the middle grades. Our graphic novel range of Dog Man, Wings of Fire, and Babysitters Club appeals to our readers. Dog Man explores universally positive themes of empathy, kindness, persistence but most importantly the importance of ‘Doing Good’. Children love humor and Dog Man is a hilarious series. Wings of Fire has a protagonist by pacifistic means is usually trying to put an end to major conflicts.
Yes, children need to read long-form narratives to discover how a book unfolds and our range of Cathy Cassidy, Tom Gates, Andy Griffiths, Jeff Kinney, Emily Rodda certainly provides this opportunity.
We will leave it up to your decision of who between Messi or Ronaldo rules, however, the children have voted that ‘Clifford the Big Red Dog’ rules because he teaches them about being a good friend, helping others and going on adventures that the world is out there to be discovered with passion.
Year 4 Camp
Dear Year Four families,
This year, the Year 4 students will be involved in a school camp during Week 10 of Term 2 to Camp Maranatha in Yandina. It will be a 3 day/2 night camp from Monday the 17th of June to Wednesday the 19th of June. Students and teachers will travel by seat-belted bus to and from BCSS to Camp Maranatha.
Many of the activities at Camp Maranatha focus on team building and leadership skills. Environmental sustainability and indigenous perspectives are also embedded in the program. Activities will include: archery, bush skills, ball sports, canoeing, climbing walls, African drumming, radio navigation, a flying-fox across the lake, a group challenge trail, and a campfire at night.
Excursion Costs
The camp should prove to be an exciting way to celebrate half a year of learning together. The cost of the camp is $295.00. This price is inclusive of all activities, accommodation, meals and the bus journey. We realise the cost of a camp can be an issue with family budgets so if you wish to discuss a payment plan to assist with your child attending this event, please contact the school office.
