Term 2, Week 8
Principal - Cassandra Clarke
Welcome to week 8! Winter is here and we are all feeling the cold winds in the mornings.
Don’t forget to write your child’s name on the jumpers, so we can return to them if found

At BCSS, we are committed to creating a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment where all students can learn, play, and grow. Every day, our staff and students work together to build a school community grounded in respect, kindness, and responsibility.
We have clear expectations to guide behaviour and support learning through our Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) teachings. While there are consequences for students who don’t follow these expectations, our focus remains on the positive—reinforcing and celebrating the behaviours that help our students succeed and contribute to a safe, supportive school culture.
Thank you for your partnership in helping us maintain a positive school environment for everyone at BCSS.
Cybersafety
Thanks to all the parents that attended our Cybersafety night on Wednesday. I know that those that attended learnt a lot, and now feel more prepared to best support their children in the online world.
Here is a URL for Brisbane Central SS parents and staff to access the ySafe website, for anyone looking to find out more information about cybersafety. brisbanecentralss.onlinesafetyhub.com.au/
Our Year 3 – 6 students attended a cybersafety session on Wednesday.
Key themes The Year 3 and 4 students learnt about:
- Private information
- Chatting safely
- Seeking help
Key themes The year 5 and 6 students discussed:
- Cyber bullying and bystander empowerment
- Safety on social media and games
- Digital footprints
Please ask your child about what they learnt during the sessions.
Together, we can make the online environment safer for everyone!
Senior Sports Day
A big thanks to Ms Wylie to organising a successful Senior Sports Day last week. Our students showed amazing sportsmanship and support for each other. Thanks again to all the parents and families who also attended our sport day! It was great to have your support.
We now look forward to our Junior Sports Day on Monday. See attached flyer for further information.
Readers Cup
Congratulations to Mrs Kelly and her group of amazing Year 6 readers who went to Sommerville House to participate in the Readers Cup event for 2025. BCSS came 5th overall, against 25 other schools.
What an amazing result! Mrs Kelly has reported back that the students were well behaved and great representatives of BCSS.
High Achievers
Another big congratulations to the students who have been attending Kelvin Grove College for additional enrichment activities. They were able to mix and learn with lots of students from other schools. What a great opportunity for them!
Special Achievement
Congratulations also goes to Melissa Gao for being selected into the Queensland Swimming Team. Melissa will be travelling to Victoria in October to compete and represent her state and her school. Good luck Melissa!
Report Cards
At the end of this term all students will receive their Semester 1 Report Card. These will be sent out to families on Friday 27 June.
I sincerely thank our families for their continued support, guidance and teamwork. Your involvement makes a meaningful difference. Through shared efforts, students are empowered to grow into responsible, curious, confident, capable, and caring individuals.
Working together with families create a powerful support system that helps students thrive both academically and personally. When we can communicate openly and collaborate consistently, we all can better understand each child’s needs, strengths, and challenges, ensuring that learning continues beyond the classroom.
Take Care,
Cassandra Clarke
Deputy Principal - Nikolas Taufatofua
What a wonderful few weeks it’s been at our school! Last Wednesday, we enjoyed a fantastic Senior Athletics Carnival. A big thank you to our staff for their organisation, our students for their energy and enthusiasm and to the many families who came along to cheer from the sidelines—your support always makes a big difference.
Today marked the final of our three Interschool Sports Gala Days. We are incredibly proud of all students who have represented our school with pride, teamwork and persistence across these events. It’s been a joy to see their growth and sportsmanship on display.
Looking ahead, we have a number of exciting events coming up:
- Junior Athletics Carnival – Monday 16th June
- Prep Open Classrooms Afternoon – Thursday 19th June
- Under 8's Day – Tuesday 24th June, 9:00am–10:50am
We warmly invite families to join us where appropriate and help us celebrate our students' efforts and milestones.
A friendly reminder to please stay on top of emails from teachers and consent requirements for upcoming excursions, incursions, camps and school activities. Unfortunately, we are unable to include students who do not have the necessary permissions in place.
We also kindly ask families to support our staff by arranging meetings in advance via email rather than arriving without notice. Our teachers are deeply committed to your child’s learning and scheduled meetings help ensure they can give you their full attention without disrupting their classroom responsibilities. We appreciate your cooperation and respect.
Thank you as always for your continued support and partnership in your child’s learning journey.
Starlab Incursion
Our Year 6 students were thrilled to step inside the inflatable Starlab planetarium recently as part of their space science unit.
Inside the darkened dome, students explored the night sky, learned about constellations, and discovered how the Earth’s rotation and revolution create day, night, and the seasons. It was a truly immersive experience that sparked curiosity and wonder, bringing their learning about space to life in a fun and interactive way!

What can we do to make the written report cards meaningful for parents?
The Teaching and Learning Reference group is undertaking consultation with parents and carers over the next few weeks to gain perspectives on how we can best communicate with parents and carers about student learning and achievement though the end of semester written reports. Your input can help shape the decisions we make regarding written report cards from Semester 2 2205. We are keen to hear the perspectives of parents and look forward to working together to making our written report cards more meaningful for informing parents about their child’s achievement and learning.

Consultation opportunities:
- Online survey open to all parents https://forms.office.com/r/u9fdEcKzxW
- Parent consultation at driveway gate Wed 18 – Fri 20 June
- Consultation before assembly on Fri 20 June, 8:30-9:00, in the school library
We look forward to hearing from many parents.
The Arts Dance and Drama Curriculum Delivery
To enhance our delivery of the Australian Curriculum, The Arts – Dance and Drama, we engage specialist dance and drama instructors from Grin and Tonic Troupe for dance/drama lessons for a block of four lessons in Term 3.
Class teachers are responsible for teaching, assessing and reporting on The Arts dance or drama curriculum in second semester as part of our set curriculum. The specialist dance and drama instructors assist with the delivery of the focus learning.
For more information about The Arts curriculum for your child’s year level see: https://v9.australiancurriculum.edu.au/help/parent-information/what-students-learn-during-the-first-11-years-of-school
Drama lessons will be provided for Year 3 and Year 5 classes, including 5/6K.
Dance lessons will be provided for Year 1, Year 4 and Year 6.
Prep and Year 2 students are also engaging in learning in The Arts area and the design of their learning is supported by the class teachers rather than the specialist instructor.
The cost of approximately $25 per student will be invoiced to parents. The final total will be determined and invoices emailed in the coming weeks. The lessons are scheduled for a block of four weeks in Term 3. We are delighted to be welcoming Kellie and Jacinta from Grin and Tonic to develop our students’ knowledge and abilities in how we express ourselves through drama or dance to build our staff capacity in this area of the curriculum.
If you would like more information, please feel free to contact the class teacher or Maureen Kelly, Head of Department, Curriculum, mkell83@eq.edu.au.
