Term 4 Week 4
Mr Micheal Grogan
Dear Parents and Carers,
Today has been a very busy day at our school acknowledging Day for Daniel, celebrating World Teachers Day and preparing for our Halloween Disco.
Our Assembly this morning was a wonderful moment as our student leaders presented all of our teaching staff with a small cupcake and message of thanks. On behalf of the entire Brisbane Central State School community, we say a big thank you to all of our wonderful educators. As you continue to inspire minds, ignite imagination and make impacts that will change lives, know that we are immensely grateful.
Absenteeism
As we head into the final six weeks of the school year, I would just like to highlight the importance of attending each and every day. Below is a table that demonstrates the impact of not attending can have in terms of time spent in school.
The impact of non-attendance is significant and at times the lost time for learning cannot be recovered. When your child misses one day per fortnight, they miss upwards of 4 weeks per year which equates to one year missed over their school life.
We are now asking that all families send in a medical certificate should a child be away for three or more consecutive days. If you would like to discuss your own child’s attendance we would be happy to meet with you and see how we, as a school can help. We want all of our students here every day.
Mr Nick Dargusch / Deputy Principal
World Teachers' Day, observed on October 27th this year, is a momentous occasion to recognise the profound impact of educators on our lives. It's an opportunity to appreciate the teachers who mould our future leaders, instilling knowledge, values, and curiosity.
At BCSS we are fortunate to have exceptional teachers who inspire a love for knowledge and foster well-rounded individuals. This World Teachers' Day, it's our turn to acknowledge their remarkable contributions.
Education is a collective effort, and teachers are the foundation of our shared responsibility. Let's work together as a community to ensure they receive the recognition and support they deserve.
On this World Teachers' Day, let's celebrate and honour the dedicated educators who shape our world one student at a time. They are the unsung heroes, and this week we sing their praises.
Legacy Garden
A huge shout out to Mr McKee and Stuart Bull for all their continued assistance in ensuring that the Year 6 Senior Leader’s Legacy Garden is complete by the end of 2023. The garden beds are all in place and filled, ready for planting. We look forward to working with our Senior Leaders to developing a functioning garden that the whole community can benefit from.
To assist in resourcing this, the leaders will be hosting another Sausage Sizzle next Friday. Please bring in $3 and receive a sausage for lunch.
Olympics Unleashed
On Friday, 27th October, Year 5-6 students heard from Jacob Templeton's, an Olympian who discussed his journey on resilience, the importance of setting goals, and how to find what you are passionate about.
Students heard firsthand from Jacob Templeton about how he overcame challenges to compete in sports at the very highest level, and how some lessons he’s learnt in sport can help students to be the best they can be – whether that’s in school, at home, on the sporting field or with friends.
A great opportunity for both our 5’s, as they begin their leadership applications, as well as our Year 6’s who will be transitioning to High School.
2024 Students leaders
Last week our Year 5 students had the opportunity to select their nominations for leadership position in 2024. Over the next week, students will be working to construct their written application, as well as create a speech for their peer at the upcoming Leaders’ Speeches Morning.
Playgroup
Our playgroup continues each Friday morning from 9am – 10:50am.
We welcome and look forward to meeting all our young community members.
Mrs Maureen Kelly / HOC
Feedback during the learning process
Feedback is a key approach that we use in the teaching and learning at BCSS so that students have the skill and will to improve their own learning.
Teachers use student’s samples of work to inform what is important in the teaching and as feedback on how effective the teaching has been. In this way teachers revise what they are teaching and how they are teaching to best target the student learning needs.
For more information about our use of feedback in learning see the Brisbane Central State School website.

ICAS Assessments – Results and certificates
Congratulations to all students who sat the ICAS assessments in Term 3 on your effort and their ongoing progress in your learning. Today we celebrated on assembly the students who were awarded a Distinction or High Distinction in the ICAS Maths, English, Writing and/or Science. ICAS assessments are designed to challenge highly capable learners and are offered through the school each year as an option parents can take for their children.

Library
In the corner of our library under the beautiful butterflies we have new and amazing books ranging from the author and illustrator of the bestselling Fly Guy series Tedd Arnold to the amazing, heartfelt and crime fighting Enola Holmes novels. All of the students have the freedom of contributing to the picking of which books should be purchased for the library.
Where do you put the requests? You may might well ask? Well, Savanna and I your Library Captains have made a beautiful, amazing and wonderful request box where the students put their new or book series student request forms. We both helped redesign the form with the library staff and it is obviously a success because we have many more requests ranging from the book Flower Power Labradors and My Book of Happy to the series of books by Anthony Horowitz (Alex Rider), Lincoln Peirce (Big Nate), Aaron Allston, Karen Traviss and Troy Denning (Star Wars), Norman Bridwell (there are 188 Clifford’s books). Some students even want more copies of books about Football stars, Cricket tips and How to win at Chess.
The new books have a very special book stand which eight students have put their own design on one letter each to make the words – New Books. Spectacular and very cultural!
Yes, we have some student interest gaps in our range of library reading books, however, soon the books Cricket Skills and Secret numbers 1 and 2 plus another copy of the most stolen book from State Libraries and schools – Guinness Book of Records may arrive to our library shelves.
Keep raising your voices and use the request forms so we can try and purchase books you are very keen to read, however, remember to search Infiniti on the library iPad (in the blue cases on the library counter) to check if we have the book in our library catalogue that you would like to read. Also, look in the Book Club issues (spare copies on the library counter) to see if the book you would like is in there because we earn points when we order from Book Club and therefore, we can order more books for all of us to read and enjoy.
If you like the Babysitters Series, Wings of Fire, Football Superstars, Captain Underpants. Bad Guys, David Walliams (Monsters – Hot off the Press) or Anh Do (Weirdo and Hot Dogs) guess what? We not only have them in full text form novel but have some of them are in graphic form novels. There are more new books on their way.
The sharing of the new books and the negotiations students are making so everyone is having a turn at reading the new books has to be commended, especially the sharing of that one book that is ‘Not for Borrowing’ and finds itself hidden in all sorts of places in the library but manages to find its way back to the centre of the top shelf of our new reading books stand for others to read.
Our library has heard your Voices, put your Choices into action and we have an Ownership of our school library and it’s for all of us. We see our library as a safe, vibrant, happy and wonderful place to be.
Student responses to the New Books. All borrowed and in your homes!!! Enjoy the read.
From your devoted Library Captains
Angela and Savanna
