Welcome back. I would like to begin officially welcoming all of our new students and families, I trust that you have all had a positive experience so far at our great school. I would also like to extend a very warm welcome back to all of our continuing families.
Our current enrolment is 503 students across our 22 classes.
Classrooms are well and truly into their daily routines and engaged in the curriculum. Please make sure you purchase all items on the year level book list to allow for class routines to run smoothly.
150 Year Celebrations
Brisbane Central is celebrating 150 years of excellence in public education in 2025. Part of those celebrations will include a Celebration Day on Saturday August 29th.

Welcome to our New and Returning Staff
Our new teachers for 2025 are Jamie Emery, Bianca Evans, Gloria Chan, Suzanne Murray, Tim Moffett, Jade Skinner and we welcome back Ruby Wylie, Tom McKee and Shannon van Dyason.
We are very fortunate to have been able to recruit such a diverse, experienced and highly capable group to join our expert teaching team here at BCSS.
I am pleased to say that all of our staff have settled back into school well and are already making positive contributions to the learning of our students.
Parents & Citizens Association
Our first P&C meeting will be held on Monday 10 February. It would be great to see as many parents and community members as possible come along and I am sure everyone will make a positive contribution to our school. We have a great P&C and it can only be enhanced by the active involvement of all of our parents and families.
This year our P&C is looking for Parent Year Level representatives to assist with coordinating one event for the year for each year level.
Deputy Principal - Nik Taufatofua

Dear Parents and Community,
Welcome back! It has been a pleasure to see familiar faces once again and we would like to extend a warm welcome to all the new families joining our school community. We have made an excellent start to the year, and it is already clear that 2025 will be a year filled with growth, learning, and exciting opportunities. Our students have returned with focus and enthusiasm, ready to continue their learning.
This week, I had the privilege of meeting with our aspiring student leaders for 2025. I must say that I am incredibly impressed by the talent, maturity, and dedication of this group of young role models. They are eager to take on new challenges and contribute to our school in meaningful ways, and I am excited to support them in their leadership development over the coming months.
As part of my personal goals for this year, I aim to spend more time in classrooms, engaging with our students and supporting their learning experiences. I have been fortunate to receive invitations from several classrooms already, and I have thoroughly enjoyed assisting in some upper-year lessons and reading with our Prep students. It is a true highlight of my week to be involved in their learning. We are incredibly fortunate to have Ms. Clark on our team, and I had the pleasure of hearing our senior choir perform on Thursday morning—a wonderful reminder of the creativity and talent flourishing within our school community.
I look forward to continuing these opportunities and working alongside our students and teachers as we make this year one to remember.

2025 Student Leaders
At Brisbane Central State School, our leaders play a vital role in fostering a positive and inclusive school community. We are thrilled to share the exciting news that we have finalised our selection process for 2025 Student Leaders.
I would like to extend a warm congratulations to all of our student leaders and also to all of the students who nominated. We are extremely lucky here at Brisbane Central to have a student body who all demonstrate leadership qualities in multiple ways every day.
To celebrate this accomplishment, we will be hosting the 2025 Investiture which is a special ceremony to formally introduce our new school leaders. We would be delighted if you could join us for this occasion, which will take place on the oval at 9:30am on Friday of Week 5. The ceremony will be an inspiring moment for our school community, and your presence will make it even more memorable.

Teaching and Learning Reference Group

Interested parents and carers are invited to join the Brisbane Central State School Teaching and Learning Reference Group. This group is being formed to gain feedback on and input into school policies and practices for the delivery of the curriculum for all students. The planned topics for Semester 1 include:
- Learning Webs
- Reporting on learning (Report Cards) for students Prep – Year 6
The Teaching and Learning Reference Group is a small team made up of parents, a community member, class teachers, the Head of Department, Curriculum and the principal. The group will meet approximately two to three times a term to:
- provide perspectives on the focus topic
- plan and implement ways to gain feedback from the broader school community
- analyse and draw conclusion based on feedback gained
While the Teaching and Learning Reference Group will be a small, consistent team, opportunities will be available for the broader parent community to provide input into the school’s policy and practices, without being part of the Teaching and Learning Reference Group. These opportunities will be shared with parents and caregivers.
Register your interest to be part of the Teaching and Learning Reference Group:
Application is via the Forms survey by Friday 14 February. https://forms.office.com/r/0EPdKGRwvi
Those who apply are invited to the first meeting on Thursday 13 February 2025, 7:45am – 8:30am in the school library.

Prep E - Inside the Classroom
BCSS Prep students have had a fantastic start to their first year of school! They’ve been busy creating patterns, reading books, learning numbers, practicing letter sounds, and making new friends. The students are following Owlie’s expectations by demonstrating safety, respect, and a love of learning. Great job, Prep students!

Library

Welcome Back. Our library is busy, busy, busy and books are flying out the door.
However, the books were flying in the door in Term 4 2024 - donations from all of you and books purchased by the school for our library. Thanks for your generosity.
We have hundreds of books that need covering so they can get to the shelves.
Every Thursday we have a Library Assist session in the library Media Room from 2.15 pm to 3.00 pm where the library books are covered or mended.
We would very much appreciate your help. If you can only come once or twice you will be more than welcome.
The BCSS Uniform shop has the BCSS library bag for sale @ $10.00 each. These library bags are waterproof, fit at least 2 books and have a tag for writing your child’s name.
Issue 1 of Book Club has arrived and are in your child’s hands.
Please use the following instructions for ordering Book Club.

Expression of Interest - Year 6 Canberra Camp
Dear Parents and Carers
This year our Year 6 students will be travelling to Sydney and Canberra for their camp. This will be a 6 day camp with further details and the Expression of Interest Form available here. Attached is the draft itinerary for the trip, which will begin with a tour of Circular Quay and a Sydney Harbour Cruise before travelling to Canberra and the Snowy Mountains.
We are asking families to complete the Expression of Interest (EOI) by Friday 14th of February. This will allow us to finalise numbers and the total cost.
At this stage we anticipate the total cost for the camp to be approximately $1500. Once you complete the EOI we will send an invoice for a non-refundable deposit of $100. This is used to secure seats on the plane.
Should you have any further questions, please talk with your child’s teacher in the first instance. If you are interested in the camp and would like to discuss payment options, I would encourage you to contact our Business Manager, Lisa (admin@brisbanecentralss.eq.edu.au) to discuss the available options.
This is a great opportunity to see our nation's capital and learn more about Australia’s rich history.
